Oreo bubble shake made with tapioca pearls, vanilla ice cream, milk and crushed ice

It’s been a while since I haven’t had a boba! Where I live, the only boba shop is located in the city center, which isn’t too close to my place. Last week I had this sudden craving, lucky I had a whole pack of tapioca pearls left in my pantry! So I made myself a boba, at home 🙂

I used to pop more often to this bubble tea place here in Brussels, it’s named 8tea5. I tried many of their beverages but my favorite one is what they call the Oreo Bubble Shake. They have all sorts of colorful flavored pearls that pop in your mouth but I usually like to go for the regular pearls which have a more dense and chewy consistency.

I had (last week – they’re all gone into several bubble shake experiments!) some Oreo cookies in my “sweets cupboard” so I thought this was the perfect time to try to recreate this Oreo Bubble Shake! I have made several attempts to reach a similar taste and consistency as that bubble shake from 8tea5. And I’m pretty happy with the end result 🙂

What is a Bubble Shake?

The term Bubble Shake comes from BUBBLE TEA + MILKSHAKE. Bubble tea is a Taiwanese drink made with tea, tapioca pearls and sweetened milk or possibly other sorts of flavorings. Bubble tea is also called milk tea, boba tea, pearl tea, etc. Boba refers to both the tapioca pearls and the drink itself. Boba consists of tapioca flour, water and brown sugar. It’s pretty easy to make them yourself but for convenience, I usually buy them in-store.

This boba recipe does not contain any tea so this cannot be called a bubble tea per se. Instead, we’re adding some scoops of ice cream, making it closer to a milkshake. Here it is if you’re looking for an Oreo Bubble Tea.

Which ingredients do I need to make this Oreo Bubble Shake?

  • tapioca pearls – I usually buy this brand, they’re ready and cooked in 5 minutes. I make about 3 drinks with one pack.
  • Oreo cookies – I used regular Oreo cookies. I added 4 of them to the drink (the perfect balance to taste the Oreo but without making the drink too sweet) and crushed 2 extra Oreo cookies for garnishing.
  • vanilla ice cream – for milkshakes, I normally use “light” vanilla ice cream. I find most regular vanilla ice creams too sweet for my taste. But that’s just me, you’ll be just fine with regular vanilla ice cream.
  • milk – I used regular plain milk.
  • crushed ice (optional) – adding some crushed ice will give your bubble shake a frappuccino consistency. If you leave it out (which is just fine) it will rather have a milkshake consistency. BE AWARE that all blenders aren’t powerful enough to crush ice. I use my KitchenAid blender which is extremely powerful but my previous blender could not crush ice. If that’s your case, leave the ice out.
  • whipped cream – add as much as you like, don’t be shy 🙂 The top of my glass isn’t large enough, so I tend to add whipped cream as I sip my bubble shake.

How to prepare this Oreo Bubble Shake?

  1. Prepare tapioca pearls – In a pot, cook the tapioca pearls in boiling water as per your package instructions (5 minutes for the tapioca pearls I use). Once cooked, drain and rinse under cold water. Transfer the tapioca pearls into your serving glass.
  2. Blend – In a blender, combine 4 Oreo cookies, vanilla ice cream, milk and (optional) crushed ice (note 1). Blend everything together. Pour into your glass.
  3. Garnish – Add as much whipped cream as you like on top of the shake. Crush one Oreo cookie and sprinkle the Oreo crumbles on top of the whipped cream. (Optional) add an extra Oreo cookie as a whole for serving.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 50 g tapioca pearls
  • 4 Oreo cookies
  • 75 g vanilla ice cream
  • 150 ml milk
  • 50 g crushed ice (optional)
  • whipped cream
  • 2 extra Oreo cookies

Instructions

  • Prepare tapioca pearls – In a pot, cook the tapioca pearls in boiling water as per your package instructions (5 minutes for the tapioca pearls I use). Once cooked, drain and rinse under cold water. Transfer the tapioca pearls into your serving glass.
  • Blend – In a blender, combine 4 Oreo cookies, vanilla ice cream, milk and (optional) crushed ice (note 1). Blend everything together. Pour into your glass.
  • Garnish – Add as much whipped cream as you like on top of the shake. Crush one Oreo cookie and sprinkle the Oreo crumbles on top of the whipped cream. (Optional) add an extra Oreo cookie as a whole for serving.

Notes

1. Crushed ice: if adding crushed ice, your shake will have the consistency of a frappuccino. If leaving crushed ice out, the consistency will rather be like a milkshake. Both are delicious. Note that not all blenders are able to crush ice, only add crushed ice if your blender is powerful enough to blend it.
