What is Milk Tea?

Milk tea is a popular beverage that has been enjoyed in many cultures for centuries. It’s typically made with black tea, milk and sugar or other sweeteners. The tea is first brewed or steeped, and then the milk and sweetener are added to create a creamy and slightly sweet flavor.

Milk tea can be made in many different ways, with variations in the type of tea used, the amount of milk and sweetener added, and the preparation method. Some people prefer to use green tea or other types of tea in their milk tea, while others prefer to use non-dairy milk alternatives like almond or soy milk.

One popular type of milk tea is bubble tea (or boba), which originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. This version of milk tea features chewy tapioca pearls added to the drink, giving it a unique texture and flavor. Other popular variations of milk tea include Thai milk tea, which is made with black tea, spices, and condensed milk, and Hong Kong-style milk tea, which is made with a blend of black teas and evaporated or condensed milk.

Milk tea is enjoyed both hot and cold and is often considered a comforting and indulgent treat.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

  • Quick and easy. This bubble tea involves relatively few steps and can be completed in just a few minutes.
  • Versatility. Oreo Bubble Tea can be served hot or cold, making it a versatile beverage that can be enjoyed year-round. It can also be customized by adjusting the sweetness level, adding more or less milk, or trying different types of tea.
  • Rich and indulgent. This Oreo Bubble Tea combines the classic flavor of milk tea with the rich and indulgent taste of Oreo cookies, creating a decadent and satisfying beverage.
  • Cheaper than buying it. Making bubble tea at home is cheaper than buying it from a bubble tea shop. The ingredients used to make Oreo Bubble Tea, such as black tea bags, tapioca pearls, milk, cream cheese, and sugar, are usually readily available and affordable at grocery stores.

Ingredients

  • milk – I use full-fat milk to make milk tea. It creates a creamier and richer texture in your Oreo Bubble Tea. But you can use other types of milk such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. Each type of milk will have a slightly different flavor and texture, so you can choose the one that you prefer. Keep in mind that using non-dairy milk alternatives may result in a thinner consistency and less creamy texture compared to using dairy milk
  • tapioca pearls – if I’m not making my own tapioca pearls, I usually buy this type of tapioca pearls. They’re the quick cooking type, which makes it even faster to get your bubble tea ready.
  • Oreo cookie – remove the cream center and crush the Oreo cookie. I place the Oreo in a zip bag and crush it with a rolling pin. You can also place it on a chopping board and crush it with a rolling up.

black tea

  • water
  • black tea bag – if making the milk tea type of boba, I like to use Earl Grey. But you can use, English Breakfast, Assam, Darjeeling, Lapsang Souchong or Ceylon. All of these will taste great.
  • brown sugar – using brown sugar in milk tea adds a rich caramel flavor and a slightly deeper color compared to using white sugar. I don’t recommend skipping it as your bubble tea may taste bland (yes, I tried it!). However, if you’re conscious about your sugar intake, you can opt to skip the brown sugar syrup instead.

brown sugar syrup

  • brown sugar – mixing brown sugar and water will give you a syrup. Making a syrup helps to add a layer of sweetness to the pearls, which complements the flavors of the milk tea. The syrup also helps to keep the pearls moist and prevent them from sticking together,
  • water

cheese foam

  • cold milk – using cold milk and cream to make cheese foam helps to stabilize the mixture and achieve a smooth and creamy texture. When the mixture is cold, the fat molecules in the cream and milk are more likely to stay together, which allows them to create a stable foam.
  • cold whipping cream – make sure you buy the whipping type of cream.
  • cream cheese – cream cheese adds a creamy and slightly tangy flavor to the cheese foam. It also helps to thicken the foam and give it a smooth texture.
  • sugar – sugar helps sweeten the cheese foam however if you’re concerned about your sugar intake, you can skip it in the cheese foam but keep it in the milk tea.

How To Make this Oreo bubble Tea?

  1. Prepare the cheese foam – Combine milk, whipping cream, cream cheese, and sugar in a high-edge container, and whip with a hand mixer until thick and peaks form.
  2. Prepare the tea – Boil water and 2 tbsp of brown sugar. Once boiling, remove from heat. Add the teabag, cover, and steep for 5 minutes. Then add the milk and stir to combine.
  3. Prepare tapioca pearls – In a pot, cook the tapioca pearls in boiling water according to the instructions on the package. Once cooked, drain and return to the pot. Add 3 tbsp of brown sugar and 3 tbsp of water to make the syrup. Mix with the tapioca pearls and cook on medium-high heat until the syrup thickens.

  5. Top with the cheese foam and crushed Oreo cookies on top.

Variations

  • Oreo Matcha Bubble Milk Tea – replace black tea with matcha powder for a more earthy flavor
  • Oreo Chocolate Bubble Milk Tea – add chocolate syrup or cocoa powder to the milk tea for a richer taste
  • Oreo Taro Bubble Milk Tea – mix taro powder into the milk tea for a unique flavor combination
  • Oreo Coconut Bubble Milk Tea – use coconut milk instead of regular milk for a tropical twist
  • Oreo Thai Bubble Milk Tea – add condensed milk and spices such as star anise and cinnamon to the milk tea for a sweet and aromatic taste.

How to serve this Oreo bubble Tea?

You can enjoy this Oreo Bubble Tea both hot and cold. When served cold, make sure you place the milk tea in the refrigerator before serving. Alternatively, you can add ice cubes, but I usually avoid doing so since ice cubes can alter the milk-to-tea ratio once they start melting.

You can serve it in glass or in a clear plastic cup with a wide straw, which is commonly used in bubble tea shops. Don’t forget to give it a good stir before drinking to mix the flavors and textures.

How To Store this Oreo Bubble Tea?

Keep the milk tea in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can be stored for up to 3-4 days.

If you are refrigerating the pearls, make sure to store them with the brown sugar syrup so that they stay moist and avoid sticking to each other. Store them separately from the milk tea. Boba pearls can last up to 3-4 days when stored properly.

The cheese foam is best made right before serving to maintain its airy and frothy texture. It should not be made too far in advance or it may become too thick or lose its fluffiness. It’s recommended to prepare the cheese foam just before you are ready to assemble and serve the Oreo bubble tea.

Emma’s Tips

  • Brew the tea correctly – steep the tea for the right amount of time according to the type of tea you’re using. Over-steeping can lead to a bitter taste. Usually 3 to 5 minutes is sufficient.
  • Sweeten the tea – use brown sugar syrup to sweeten the tea. You can adjust the amount of brown sugar but I do not recommend skipping it. As mentioned earlier your tea may taste a little bland.
  • Use cold milk and cream for cheese foam – cold milk and cream are essential for a creamy and smooth cheese foam. Make sure to use full-fat cream cheese for the best results.
  • Chill before serving – if you’re serving the bubble tea cold, chill it in the refrigerator before serving for a refreshing taste.
